unorganized flowers with broad basal leaves.

This is called Bluebells Flower too, seen in April -May worldwide. Of course they are cultivated types. The original habitats places are Portugal and Spain in Iberian peninsula.

British people voted 'Bluebell' as the flower that they felt best symbolised their countries, those are Wales, England and Scotland, when the concerning organisation in 2002 asked to the folk. Apparently 'Bluebell' flowers of April-May are abundant at every natural sites. The flower seems to have got widespread popularity in past centuries. How did the Iberian plants come to British soil?

The English and Spanish war took place intermittently between 1585 and 1604. A part of the period was the sea battle in 1588, in where the Spanish king Philip II (Felipe II in Spanish) attacked the land of Elizabeth 1st. The Spanish Armada means "Great and Most Fortunate Navy (無敵艦隊)'' consisted of 130 ships.
Reference; In Japan Hideyoshi Hashiba became Kanpaku in 1585 because of unification of whole Japan. Kanpaku means the top position of Samurau claas. At age 50 in 1586 he wss given an honourable family-name, Toyotomi by Emperor Goyozei.

In July 20-23 1588 the first sea battle took place nearby Plymouth on the south coast of England. Since then there were several actions changing places to northwards. Armada's main warships 'galleon' with huge cannons were inferior in shallow bays around Calais, so that they couldn't manage to cooperate with the army of Low-land-Habsburg which should have invade England in order to attack London. The coalition by British and Dutch navies progressed the war in superior and Armada had to escape towards the North.
In September Armada weakened by long voyage and short of water/food sailed around Scotland and Ireland. At the west coast most of ships wrecked against rocks. The strong Gulf stream brought them to East-Northwords. It's said such unexpected storm might been influenced by Little Ice Age at the middle age. How many ships ware gone? you can see it clearly on this map.
Most of the victims on Almada expedition was due to disease and hunger during voyage and wrecking accidents. It is much surpass than the number killed by the fighting. The history repeats, war as usual. Remember Moscow expedition in winter (Sep-Dec 1812) by Napoleon.

This image shows exact same kind as you see↑at the top, These three flowers face to different directions, to left, right and beneath (spreading). Petals are not united at their base. It will be seen independant 6 petals if more open. Tips of petal are not revolute. Behind them you see many long vertical leaves (25-35㎜ across) that you also observe colour and shape in top picture with a lot of spreading flowers.

Back to the 'Bluebell' flower. It is ''Spanish Bluebell'' (Hyacinthoides hispanica) almost. The Laten`s name means `similar to Hyacinth`and `grows in Spain`. Why I say `almost`? This species is used to be planted in garden as well as naturalized in introduced soils, in particular in British islands at its beginning phase, because of enormous popularity.

At first in Portugal and Spain, I suppose, it was domesticated from nature, then escaped from the gardens. Naturally hybridisation with other species might occur, in not only Iberian soil but also British wild. Individual hybrid population which succeeds strongly inherited character of Spanish Bluebell is difficult to be determined. In other words there is a large variation in genetic origin. Such matter is common, hybridisation as usual. That`s why `almost`.

【Note】;
The Virgin Queen of England and Ireland, Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was a contemporarie with Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣 秀吉, 2 February 1536 or 26 March 1537 – 18 September 1598). She was aged 69. He was aged 61.
Hideyoshi could mobilize the army a total of 160,000 for first invasion of Korea that spanned from 1592 to 1598.
At war of Spain and England, Philip 2, king of Spain had 8.000 sailors and 26000 soldiers on board for 130 warships, in addition he ordered 30,000 strong force from Habsburgs Spanish Netherlands. Total mobilised manpower counted about 56,000 which was really extraordinary big army in middle age. The force of Elizabeth 1 might be much less than Felipe II.
You can imagine how Japan (of Hideyoshi Toyotomi) had then such powerful army. National financial scale of House of Toyotomi might be far superior to that of the House of Tudor, I guess, when you would come to know populations of both countries. In the last era of Tudor, England was not one of the international great powers yet.

Klompen ; Dutch wood shoes [木靴の話]

''Niederländische Holzschuhe'', when I say, it sounds quite eccentric. Dutch word 'Klompen' is naturally better than that of English and German. 37 years ago I met mr. Klompenmaker. Of cause you can guess immediately what it means. His family was ever a maker of klompen. There are many family names with 'maker' of which you may associate with almost every kind of profession.

Why is this daily ordinary thing subjected here? Because of this happening where an old but very healthy man has been walking on an event of The 4 days march. Look at ''Klompen'' accompanied with gray thick socks which are considered real official one in combination with wood shoes.

A type of wood shoes in Japan is Geta, There are two categories, simply for men and women. Someone wears kimono then takes Geta. Half century ago, however, it was usual that people with normal clothes used Geta in casual scene. Nowadays you observe hardly people with Geta on street. Geta disappeared out of ordinary life except traditional profession and circumstances like Marriage ceremony.

Straatbomen van Canadensis

This tree kind is a popular. 'Klompen-maker' would say '''Canadian poplar' which is likely used mostly for Klompen. It's big and tall (reach 30 m) and planted often as street trees.

Today I draw for a while simple landscape on nieuwe klompen. I buy always ''blank klompen'' which is beautiful and presents the woody texture as it is. Some old 'klompen's returned to the soil. Natural materials is better to go back to the earth via burning fire isn't it!

Dutch counties or states organization can profit by enough quantity of Canadian poplar thanks to rather quick growing. Farmers, gardeners and lokal inhabitants wear still klompen. I would like to say that the klompen is alive in Dutch way of life.

【Note】:
01. 'Schoen-maker' instead of Klompen-maker. It's 'Shoemaker' in English and 'Schumacher in German. A known Mr. Schumacher was not Shoemaker but driver of F1 car race, who got an accident in winter 2 years ago. Dutch, German, English and Frisian belong to the west German language group. Frisian is 'Fries' in Dutch, a language in province 'Friesland' in the Netherlands.
