This is one of my chairs designs. It's the very first prototype more than 30 years ago in the Netherlands. Socalled Cane chair, but It's not typical one which is made by fine (5 mm) cut cane.
The concept was to appear characters of the flexible material. Can you imagine such time span on the design?

It's a 'vintage chair' almost according to my time of life. My design concept had nothing to do the below written history of Rattan and a fact that I belong to a Asian nation.

I was first introduced to the material in 1979 in Friesland where Dutch center of Rattan industry was concentrated, probably since a century ago. Rattan trees grow in tropical rainforest. There are reportedly hundreds of species, I've no idea which species are used to be planted and exported.

Idea practice by Naomi 01
I made a full-size drawings, prototype chief, Jan Wemer completed this in two days. To make a rough model is in order to get general impression and to know the outline of such as strength, the number of steps, assembly-order and difficulty to bend raw wood etc... In this case, it was clear not enough elastic force against the average Dutch men. Later it was repeatedly carried out improvements. Incidentally a decade later I added by myself the rear portionas the double pieces.

The Netherlands had have a nostalgie with colonial richness creating tropical atmosfeer which has lasted at least until the end of 1970s when war-experienced generation occupied main position in the society. A biggest producer was German company, from which I had to be surprised that even the defeated nation might be fond of colonial style but romantic. Their residences were filled with Indonesian natural sources like Rattan. [note 1]

After WW2 Rattan furniture had 20% of whole furniture market at the top period in central Europe. Indonesia and other tropical countries decided to keep natural wood resouces by own, it meant the end of Rattan industry in Europa.

1. Mata Hari, a Dutch exotic dancer and so-called ''Double Agent'' during WW1 , was also a product of Dutch colonial history. Her identity : Margaretha Griet Zelle born in Leeuwarden 1876, executed in Paris 1917.
