The Bluebell of Scotland : Who brought it to Britain? [ as a supplement ブルーベリー外伝]

Sittow and Horenbout were both Flemish painters and Catharine`s contemporaries. Sittow was a court painter, exceptionally well paid by Henry 8. Left portrait was painted circa 1502, being said probably by Sittow. The lady is considered as Catherine whose hasband, Arthur Tudor, son of King Henry 7 died in April 1502. It was half year marriage and her half year presence in England since she left Spain.

The young couple were each other far cousins. Her paternal grandmother was Catherine Lancaster, therefor she was named so. It is all about John of Gaunt who was grand-grandfather of Henry 7 and father of Catherine Lancaster. The marriage at Arthur`15 and Catherine`s 16 years old seemed to be glorious, because of both Lancastrians and a variable alliance with powerful Spain and small unknown Tudor monarchy.

Mother of Catherine, Spanish queen Isabella 1 needed even small country in order to oppose same Catholic France, at the same time Henry 7 should make up stable and strong base for Tudor`s future. For both countries it was strategical choise. The mother gave youngest daughter huge dowry. The future`s bridal travelled to Britain in 1501 accompanied by African black people as princess entourage, saying at first time for British people to see Negroes.

And she would have not brought only money and daily luxuries. The princes might have lovely plants with her luggage, because she seemed to be gentle-natured in addition to getting superior education. Plants with beautiful flowers that Southern British folk had never seen [note 1]. One of them might be Bluebell, namely Harebell which was going to make British folk very happy in coming centuries, although the marriage of Catherine and Authur was not really consumed. Because within half year he passed away unfotunately.

On 20th October 2015, a little dark becoming evening I saw these flowers at roadside in my village. Quite windy, maybe typical autumn. Oh poor only three flowers. Being surprised I took pictures because I thought their blooming season already over.
This kind belongs to a genus called Campanula, known as Harebell in south British eilands. The leaves look like hare as you see here. The genus seems to contain about 300 or 400 species in the world. Perennial grass, five petals, blue color mostly, white flower`s species sometime.

In this collage you can see ↓a style and a coupple of filaments inside the flower.(corolla), At the foot of the corolla there are five sepals. Its rounded bulbous shape is clear to see. Images were taken some years ago on sunny day in summer.

This and other species under the name Campanula which are found in European soil might be originated in region around the Mediterranean sea where is far from Central Europa, for instance today`s Netherlands and Germany.

When did Campanula rotundifolia get a name *Harebell* in England and *Bluebell* in Scotland? As I mentioned above, it would be bigining of 16 century. European continent got into the era of the family of Habsburg. and the south Britain wellcomed new Tudor monarchy with a symbol Red Rose.

↓ 07 Oct. I found a plenty of Harebell on a spot. At foot of American red oak. Flowers are swaying violently in the breeze. In grasses three mushrooms hide themself as if do not want to be found.

【NOTE】:
1. Such rich travel of royalty and the aristocracy used to bring often something new in its destnation, as well as the expedition of troops . It could be said as a kind of transmission of culture. In the case of princes's travel for marriage, things were clothes fasion, food/cooking, furniture and plant/flower etct. A typical example : Croissant in Paris as a result of Marie Antoinette marriage with Louis-Auguste(later Louis XVI of France). In 1770 she brought own koks from Wien(Vienna) to Paris (Versailles). Since then the croissant became reportedly popular as luxury-bread.
