Familie 01
's Zomers buiten (Summer cottage) The family Meebeek Cruywagen
painted in 1640-1645 by Jacob van Loo (1624-1670)
Rijksmuseum, museum of the Netherlands, in Amsterdam

This tableau of family Meebeek Cruywagen is something peculiar although they belonged to Bourgeoisie claas that was rich citizen. Father Hendric right standing couple was successful sail-maker in Amsterdam. In summer they stayed in this nice house, west of the city, due to avoid stench, busyness and the pest. Mrs, Cruywagen created six children. You see a grandmother, unknown whose mother of Mr or Mrs.

An unique Brabant family image. ↓Father most behind who is very artist of this painting, and mother with 9 children. You can recognize perhaps it is a poor family as usual by means of so many children. Such a profession like painter could not make enough money at the time as well as ordinary people like farmers.

Familie 02
Family portrait
painted in 1949 by Kees Bastiaan
The Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch

A part. This is taken by another com-digi camera with wrong colour. Two of four girls you see might be twin. In total 15 children it may occur a twin.

Bastiaan's activity as family-maker resulted finally 15 children. It sounds astonishing numbers doesn't it! Actually it was, however, not exceptional. Before and after war it was normal family image with a lot of children at least southward of the river Waal and Rhein, where people have believed always Roman Catholic. Children were born in natural way as it was.

I am used to hearing about big families in my village since 20 years ago, like ''I am youngest in total 12 brothers and sisters''. Until a couple of decade ago women did not seemingly take pills that avoid pregnancy.
Remembering such postwar period someone tells me; When you heard nothing for a while from a family, you should worry them really. Because you have been informed every year a birth of new baby!

* Recently I have seen several families pictures on the internet in which their members were posing in opportunities of someone's birthday, new year gathering or local festival. It reminds me paintings in museums as family theme.

1. A family of my friend. All members look like cheerful and happy.
Masamichi san Family 01
Nowadays in Japan there are hardly big families like this. Its birthrate is less than 1 point. In fact Japan is heading towards a decline.

2. A plenty of monarchy's tableau. An example : painted 1515 by Bernhard Strigel, The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) in Vienna / Wien.
Here three generation of the Habsburg ''Maximlian 1'' family. Strigel was Maximilian's favorite court painter, traveled with his boss who had to visit many places always not only his imperial domein but also its outskirt.
The painter knew every inch of emperor's feature and that of relatives. You see clearly son and grandsons have same chin of the emperor so-called the Habsburg Jaw that is an inbreeding deformities as result of relatives marriage in order to secure political relations, keep the succession lines. Many disabilities caused by medical unawareness lasted up to 19 centuries, thus it is at least a period of 3.5 centuries.
Maximilian 1 Mary of Burgondy
Emperor Maximilian I and his wife Mary of Burgundy, with their son Philip Handsome (between them), their grandsons from left Ferdinand I and Charles V, and Louis II, husband of their daughter Mary of Austria.
